Every ingredient we use, and why we chose it.

Humectants are a category of ingredients that attract and bind water to the skin. They work by pulling moisture from the air — and from deeper skin layers — up into the surface, keeping skin comfortable, plump, and hydrated throughout the day. Humectants are at the heart of every Second Spring formula. Skin that has gone through hormonal changes tends to lose its natural ability to hold onto moisture, and this is one of the most direct, gentle ways to support it.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice

What it is:  The inner leaf gel of the aloe vera plant, used in skincare for centuries for its soothing, hydrating properties.

What it does:  Aloe provides a lightweight layer of hydration that sinks in quickly without any heaviness. It helps calm skin that feels tight or reactive, and supports a comfortable, settled feeling after cleansing. It's rich in polysaccharides — natural sugars that help hold water at the skin surface — as well as vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds known for their soothing effect on the skin.

Why we use it:  Aloe replaces a portion of the water in every formula we make. It's one of the first ingredients on every one of our labels — which means it's present at a meaningful, functional level, not just a trace.

Glycerin

What it is:  A naturally occurring compound found in all plant and animal fats. The glycerin used in skincare is typically plant-derived.

What it does:  Glycerin is one of the most well-researched and effective humectants in skincare. It draws water to the skin and helps it stay there, maintaining comfortable hydration for hours. It also strengthens the skin's natural moisture barrier and has been shown to support the skin's ability to regulate water loss — something that becomes more challenging as skin changes with age. Glycerin absorbs quickly and leaves no sticky or greasy residue.

Why we use it:  Glycerin is the primary humectant in our formulas. It's gentle, proven, and widely tolerated — even by the most reactive skin.

Propanediol

What it is:  A plant-derived humectant made from corn sugar. It is a gentler, more sustainable alternative to propylene glycol, which it closely resembles in function but not in irritation potential.

What it does:  Propanediol helps skin hold onto moisture and improves the texture of a formula, making it feel smooth and effortlessly absorbable. It also helps other active ingredients spread evenly across the skin and absorb more effectively — working in the background to make everything around it work better.

Why we use it:  It is one of the best-tolerated humectants available, with an excellent safety profile for sensitive and reactive skin. We use it alongside glycerin to provide layered, lasting hydration without heaviness.

Betaine

What it is:  A naturally occurring compound found in sugar beets and other plants. It belongs to a class of molecules called osmolytes — substances that help cells regulate their water balance.

What it does:  Betaine helps skin cells hold onto water at a cellular level. It also has a mild softening effect on skin, contributing to a smooth and comfortable feel. Because it works with the skin's own water-regulation mechanisms, it's particularly well-suited for reactive or sensitive skin that can be easily disrupted.

Why we use it:  In the cleanser, betaine does double duty: it contributes humectancy while also acting as a mildness enhancer for the surfactant system, helping the formula cleanse without stripping.

Sodium PCA

Sodium PCA

What it is:  The sodium salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid — a naturally occurring component of the skin's own Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), the built-in system skin uses to keep itself hydrated.

What it does:  Sodium PCA is one of the most effective humectants found in skin — and it's already there, made naturally. As a topical ingredient, it helps replenish and reinforce this internal hydration system, attracting moisture from the environment and helping skin feel consistently comfortable. It's exceptionally well-tolerated and has a particular affinity for dry, tight-feeling skin.

Why we use it:  For skin that has become drier and more reactive with age, replenishing the NMF is a meaningful act of care. Sodium PCA does that directly, in skin's own language.

Snow Mushroom Extract

What it is:  An extract derived from Tremella fuciformis, a white, cloud-like mushroom with a long history in East Asian wellness traditions, prized for its skin-nourishing properties.

What it does:  Snow mushroom is rich in polysaccharides — long-chain sugars that form a lightweight, flexible film on the skin surface that traps moisture in place. This film gives skin a smooth, slightly plumped sensation without any heaviness. Snow mushroom particles are smaller than those of hyaluronic acid, which allows them to sit closer to the skin surface and deliver a soft, natural-feeling layer of comfort.

Why we use it:  It's a botanically derived alternative to synthetic hyaluronic acid, offering similar surface hydration in a form that aligns with our commitment to plant-based ingredients.

These ingredients work to calm, protect, and reinforce the skin's natural barrier — the protective layer that keeps moisture in and irritants out. When hormonal shifts occur, this barrier often becomes less efficient, leaving skin feeling tight, reactive, or easily unsettled. These ingredients help restore a sense of steadiness and comfort.

Panthenol

What it is:  The stable, skin-absorbable form of Vitamin B5. Once it absorbs into skin, it converts to pantothenic acid — a vitamin the skin uses in its own natural processes.

What it does:  Panthenol is one of the most versatile and well-tolerated ingredients in skincare. It attracts moisture and helps skin hold onto it, while also supporting the skin barrier. It has a calming effect on skin that feels reactive or sensitive, and helps skin feel noticeably softer and smoother. It also supports healthy surface cell function, which contributes to that comfortable, well-cared-for feeling over time.

Why we use it:  Panthenol is present in all four Second Spring products at meaningful levels. For skin navigating hormonal changes, it provides gentle, reliable support without any risk of irritation.

Beta-Glucan

What it is:  A polysaccharide derived from oats, yeast, or mushrooms. The beta-glucan used in skincare is typically sourced from oats or baker's yeast.

What it does:  Beta-glucan is deeply soothing for skin that looks or feels reactive. It helps reduce the appearance of redness and supports the skin's barrier function, helping skin maintain its protective role more effectively. It also acts as a humectant, drawing moisture to the surface, and leaves a silky, comfortable feeling on the skin.

Why we use it:  For skin that has become more easily unsettled, beta-glucan offers meaningful calming support. We include it in both the essence and the serum to provide continuous comfort throughout the layered routine.

Allantoin

What it is:  A naturally occurring compound found in comfrey root and other plants, though it can also be synthetically produced for purity and consistency. It has a long history of use in healing and soothing formulations.

What it does:  Allantoin softens and smooths rough, dry, or uncomfortable skin texture. It's known for its ability to calm skin that feels irritated or sensitized, and it supports the natural process by which the skin sheds and renews its surface cells — gently, without any harsh exfoliating action. The result is skin that feels noticeably smoother and more comfortable over time.

Why we use it:  In the Daily Reset Essence, allantoin supports a smooth surface and a calmer-feeling skin right from the first step of the routine.

Colloidal Oat Flour

What it is:  Finely milled oats that have been processed to remain stable in water. Colloidal oatmeal has a long history in dermatology and is one of the few botanical ingredients recognized as an active skin protectant.

What it does:  Colloidal oat flour forms a gentle, protective layer on the skin surface that helps guard against moisture loss and environmental irritants during cleansing — a moment when skin is most vulnerable to stripping. It calms itchy, reactive, or sensitive skin and leaves skin feeling soft and comforted rather than tight or squeaky-clean.

Why we use it:  Cleansing is often where sensitive skin feels most disrupted. Including colloidal oatmeal in the Fresh Start Cleanser ensures that the first step of the routine actively protects the barrier rather than challenging it.

Hydrolyzed Oat Protein

What it is:  Oat proteins that have been broken down (hydrolyzed) into smaller fragments, allowing them to interact more easily with the skin surface.

What it does:  Hydrolyzed oat protein forms a fine, flexible conditioning film on skin that improves moisture retention and leaves skin feeling smooth, soft, and supported. The smaller protein fragments have an affinity for the skin surface and help strengthen it against moisture loss, particularly important during the rinsing phase of cleansing. It also contributes a gentle, slip-like feel that makes the cleanser comfortable to rinse.

Why we use it:  In a cleanser formula, rinsable conditioning agents are particularly valuable — they do their work and leave the skin in better condition than before the wash.

Bisabolol

What it is:  A naturally occurring compound found in the German chamomile plant, though the bisabolol in skincare is typically produced from a sustainable plant source to ensure purity and stability.

What it does:  Bisabolol is one of the gentlest and most effective calming ingredients available. It helps reduce the appearance of redness and skin irritation, and supports skin that feels easily reactive or sensitized. It absorbs easily, leaves no residue, and has a long track record of safety — including for skin that reacts to most things.

Why we use it:  In the Calm Infusion Serum, bisabolol works alongside Centella and Magnolia Bark as part of a coordinated redness-relief system. Each ingredient approaches calming from a slightly different direction; together they provide layered, meaningful comfort.

Plants have been used to care for skin for thousands of years. Our botanical extracts are chosen for their specific, well-documented benefits — not for novelty or trends. Each one earns its place in the formula by doing something meaningful for skin that has changed and that deserves thoughtful, grounded support.

Centella Asiatica Extract

What it is:  An extract from Centella asiatica, also known as Gotu Kola, a plant native to Asia with a history of use in traditional medicine for wound healing and skin restoration. It contains active compounds — including asiaticoside, madecassoside, and asiatic acid — that have been studied for their effect on skin.

What it does:  Centella helps calm the appearance of redness and skin that feels easily unsettled. Its active compounds support the skin barrier, help maintain the skin's natural structural proteins, and contribute to a calmer, more balanced complexion over time. It's a well-tolerated ingredient even for highly reactive skin.

Why we use it:  Centella is a cornerstone of both the Calm Infusion Serum and the Replenishing Cream. It bridges calming and barrier support — two things skin in hormonal transition often needs at the same time.

Magnolia Bark Extract

What it is:  An extract from the bark of the Magnolia officinalis tree, standardized for its active compound honokiol. It has been used for centuries in traditional East Asian wellness practices.

What it does:  Honokiol is a potent plant compound with well-documented calming and antioxidant properties. On skin, it helps reduce the visible signs of reactivity and redness, and provides protection against environmental stress. It works quickly and is effective at very low concentrations, which keeps it gentle and skin-compatible.

Why we use it:  Magnolia bark is one of the two star actives in the Calm Infusion Serum. It approaches calming through a different mechanism than Centella, which is why they work so well together — complementary rather than redundant.

Kakadu Plum Extract

What it is:  An extract from the Kakadu plum, a small fruit native to Australia and a sacred food of Indigenous Australians. It holds the distinction of being the world's highest known natural source of Vitamin C — up to 100 times more than an orange by weight.

What it does:  Kakadu plum provides a natural, whole-plant source of Vitamin C alongside a range of other polyphenols and plant compounds. Together, these support a more even-looking, healthy complexion, help defend skin from environmental stress, and contribute to a brighter, more rested appearance over time. Unlike isolated ascorbic acid, the natural form is more stable in cream formulations and gentler on sensitive skin.

Why we use it:  We chose Kakadu plum over conventional Vitamin C actives because it delivers similar benefits in a form that aligns with our botanical philosophy — and one that's appropriate for reactive skin that can't always tolerate high-dose actives.

Green Tea Extract

What it is:  An extract from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant — the same plant used to make green tea. The skincare extract is concentrated to preserve its active polyphenols, particularly EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate).

What it does:  Green tea extract is one of the most researched plant antioxidants. It helps protect skin from environmental stress and the visible changes that come from everyday exposure to pollution and UV light. It also has a gentle calming effect on skin, helping to reduce the appearance of redness and supporting a more settled, even-looking complexion.

Why we use it:  In the Replenishing Cream, green tea extract contributes to the antioxidant system and complements the brightening action of Kakadu plum.

Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate

What it is:  The potassium salt of glycyrrhizic acid, derived from licorice root. This form was chosen specifically because it does not contain sodium benzoate or potassium sorbate — additives common in standard licorice root extracts that can be problematic for sensitive skin formulations.

What it does:  Dipotassium glycyrrhizate is known for its ability to visibly reduce redness and calm reactive skin. It's well-documented in dermatological research and is used in formulas targeting redness, sensitivity, and general skin discomfort. It's gentle enough for daily use and compatible even with highly reactive skin.

Why we use it:  We made a deliberate ingredient swap here — replacing a standard licorice extract with the purified dipotassium glycyrrhizate to ensure the calming benefit without any unnecessary additives.

Algae Extract

What it is:  A broad-spectrum extract from marine algae, one of the oldest organisms on earth. Seaweeds and algae have been used in skincare and wellness traditions across many coastal cultures for generations.

What it does:  Algae extract provides a natural source of trace minerals, amino acids, and polysaccharides — compounds that help maintain healthy-looking, comfortable skin. It has mild hydrating and soothing properties and contributes to skin's overall sense of nourishment and balance.

Why we use it:  In the Fresh Start Cleanser, it adds a gentle boost of botanical nourishment to what is otherwise a functional cleansing step — reinforcing the principle that cleansing should leave skin better, not just clean.

Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate

What it is:  The result of fermenting Lactobacillus bacteria and then processing the culture to extract its beneficial compounds. It is a postbiotic — meaning the active components are produced by bacteria but delivered to skin without living organisms.

What it does:  Lactobacillus ferment lysate supports the health of the skin microbiome — the community of microorganisms that naturally live on the skin surface and play a role in its resilience. It helps reinforce the skin's barrier function, contributes to a calmer, more balanced-looking complexion, and may help skin become less reactive over time with consistent use.

Why we use it:  The skin microbiome is increasingly understood to be central to how skin behaves. For skin that has become unpredictable or reactive, supporting that microbial ecosystem is a meaningful and forward-thinking form of care.

Emollients are the ingredients that soften and smooth skin by filling in the spaces between skin cells and reinforcing the lipid layer of the skin surface. Plant oils bring their own profiles of fatty acids, antioxidants, and plant compounds — making them much more than just moisturizing agents.

What it is:  A stable, plant-derived oil most commonly sourced from olive or sugarcane. It is the hydrogenated form of squalene — a compound naturally produced by human skin.

What it does:  Squalane is one of the most skin-compatible emollients available. It absorbs quickly and completely, leaving skin soft and comfortable without any greasy residue. Because it mirrors skin's own chemistry, it's exceptionally well-tolerated — even by reactive or oily skin. It also provides light antioxidant protection and helps other ingredients spread evenly across the skin.

Why we use it:  Squalane is the backbone of our oil phase across multiple products. It delivers reliable emolliency and feel without any of the heaviness or occlusion that can make richer formulas feel unwearable.

Coco-Caprylate/Caprate

What it is:  A lightweight ester derived from coconut oil and caprylic and capric fatty acids. It is not coconut oil — the process of creating it removes the components of coconut that can cause sensitivity.

What it does:  Coco-caprylate/caprate is a fast-absorbing, non-greasy emollient that leaves a silky, dry-touch feel on skin. It helps create formulas that feel effortlessly wearable — not heavy, not slippery, just smooth. It also contributes to a stable emulsion and helps active ingredients distribute evenly.

Why we use it:  For skin navigating comfort and hydration without wanting anything heavy or occlusive, this emollient delivers softness in a genuinely lightweight way.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride

What it is:  A plant-derived oil made from caprylic and capric fatty acids found in coconut oil, combined with glycerin. Like coco-caprylate/caprate, it is processed in a way that removes sensitizing components from the source oil.

What it does:  A highly stable, gentle emollient that conditions and softens skin. It absorbs readily without leaving a film and serves as a carrier for oil-soluble active ingredients, helping them spread and absorb effectively.

Why we use it:  In the Calm Infusion Serum, it serves as the primary carrier for the oil-phase calming actives, ensuring they reach the skin effectively while contributing to the serum's smooth, lightweight texture.

Isoamyl Laurate

What it is:  A plant-derived ester made from lauric acid (found in coconut oil) and isoamyl alcohol (derived from fermentation). It belongs to a class of lightweight skin-feel emollients known for their elegance.

What it does:  Isoamyl laurate has an exceptionally light, dry skin feel that is difficult to achieve with traditional plant oils. It absorbs quickly, leaves no residue, and imparts a smooth, velvety texture to the skin — contributing to that feeling of a cream that is rich but never heavy.

Why we use it:  In the Replenishing Cream, this ingredient is what helps the formula feel substantial without ever feeling greasy. It's a precision skin-feel choice that distinguishes a well-formulated cream from a standard one.

Camellia Seed Oil

What it is:  A lightweight, golden oil cold-pressed from the seeds of the Camellia sinensis plant — the same plant as green tea, but the seed oil is distinct from the leaf extract. It has been used in Japanese skincare for centuries.

What it does:  Camellia seed oil is rich in oleic acid, a fatty acid that closely mirrors the composition of skin's own sebum. This makes it exceptionally compatible with skin — it absorbs readily, nourishes the surface lipid layer, and leaves skin feeling smooth and healthy without any heaviness. It also provides naturally occurring antioxidants that help protect the skin from environmental stress.

Why we use it:  This is the primary plant oil in the Replenishing Cream. Its natural affinity for skin, elegant texture, and antioxidant properties made it the right choice for a cream designed to support skin comfort over the long term.

Cupuaçu Butter

What it is:  A creamy butter extracted from the seeds of the Cupuaçu fruit, native to the Amazon rainforest and related to cacao. It is prized in botanical skin care for its unique fatty acid profile and exceptional ability to hold moisture.

What it does:  Cupuaçu butter has a remarkable capacity to absorb and retain water — up to nearly twice its weight. This makes it more than a surface emollient; it also supports the skin's ability to maintain hydration over time. It melts readily into skin, leaving a soft, non-greasy finish, and contributes natural phytosterols that support the skin's lipid barrier.

Why we use it:  This is one of the hero ingredients of the Replenishing Cream. Its water-holding properties are exceptional, and its feel is exactly what a cream for dry, changed skin should be — nourishing without heaviness.

Evening Primrose Oil

What it is:  An oil cold-pressed from the seeds of the evening primrose flower, notable for its exceptionally high content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) — an omega-6 fatty acid that is rare in plant oils and particularly relevant for skin health.

What it does:  GLA is a fatty acid that the body converts into compounds involved in maintaining the skin barrier and regulating skin comfort. When applied topically, evening primrose oil supports a healthy-feeling skin barrier and is particularly beneficial for dry, reactive, or hormonally influenced skin. It has a nourishing, softening effect and absorbs without leaving a heavy feel.

Why we use it:  For skin navigating hormonal change, GLA-rich oils are a thoughtful, targeted choice. Evening primrose oil addresses the specific nutritional needs of the skin barrier in a way that other plant oils cannot replicate.

Jojoba Oil

What it is:  Technically a liquid wax rather than an oil, cold-pressed from the seeds of the jojoba shrub native to the Sonoran Desert. It is structurally similar to the natural sebum produced by human skin.

What it does:  Jojoba's similarity to skin's own oils makes it uniquely compatible across skin types — it absorbs readily, conditions the skin surface, and helps maintain a soft, balanced feel. Its inherent stability means it resists oxidation far better than most plant oils, and it carries a light, non-greasy skin feel.

Why we use it:  In the Fresh Start Cleanser, jojoba provides a small but meaningful conditioning element that helps preserve the skin's natural oils during the cleansing process.

Pomegranate Sterols

What it is:  Plant sterols (phytosterols) extracted from pomegranate seed oil. Phytosterols are plant-based compounds structurally similar to cholesterol — a key lipid in the skin barrier.

What it does:  Phytosterols support the skin barrier at a structural level, reinforcing the lipid matrix that holds skin cells together and prevents moisture loss. Pomegranate sterols in particular bring strong antioxidant properties alongside their barrier function. They help skin feel stronger, more protected, and more consistently comfortable, particularly in dry or barrier-compromised conditions.

Why we use it:  In the Replenishing Cream, pomegranate sterols work alongside hydrogenated lecithin to provide a botanical, plant-based approach to barrier lipid support.

Hydrogenated Lecithin

What it is:  A stabilized form of lecithin — a phospholipid compound naturally found in plant sources including sunflower and soy. The hydrogenation process makes it more stable and better suited to cream formulations.

What it does:  Phospholipids are structural components of cell membranes and the skin barrier itself. Applied topically, hydrogenated lecithin helps reinforce the skin's natural barrier lipid structure, improving its ability to retain moisture and resist external disruption. It also has a smoothing, conditioning effect and helps other ingredients in the formula absorb more readily.

Why we use it:  Together with pomegranate sterols, hydrogenated lecithin gives the Replenishing Cream genuine barrier-supportive depth — not just surface softness, but reinforcement of the lipid architecture that keeps skin resilient.

Emulsifiers are the ingredients that allow water and oil to blend into a stable, uniform formula. Without them, creams and serums would separate immediately. Good emulsifiers are also skin-compatible — the best ones are derived from natural sources and leave a skin-friendly feel.

Cetearyl Alcohol & Cetearyl Glucoside

Cetearyl Alcohol (and) Cetearyl Glucoside

What it is:  A two-part emulsifier system combining a fatty alcohol (cetearyl alcohol) with a sugar-derived glucoside (cetearyl glucoside). This combination — known as Montanov 68 — is one of the most skin-compatible emulsifier systems available, derived from plant sources.

What it does:  This emulsifier creates stable, elegant creams and serums that apply smoothly and absorb comfortably. Importantly, cetearyl glucoside is also structurally compatible with the skin's own natural emulsification system, which means it helps the formula blend with skin rather than sitting on top of it. The fatty alcohol component contributes to formula stability and a slight conditioning effect.

Why we use it:  We chose this system specifically for its skin-compatibility. It is widely considered one of the gentlest emulsifier options for sensitive skin formulations.

Cetyl Alcohol

What it is:  Despite its name, this is not an alcohol in the drying, irritating sense — it is a fatty alcohol derived from plant sources (typically coconut or palm). It is a completely different class of compound from denatured or ethyl alcohol.

What it does:  Cetyl alcohol helps stabilize the cream's emulsion, contributes to a smooth, elegant texture, and adds a mild conditioning effect to the skin. It also helps the formula maintain its consistency across temperature changes, which is important for stability.

Why we use it:  It gives the Replenishing Cream its luxurious but not-heavy consistency — the feeling of something substantive that still absorbs well.

It also forms a light, breathable film on skin that contributes to a soft, silky feel after absorption. Unlike some synthetic thickeners, it remains stable across a range of pH levels and interacts well with other natural ingredients.

Why we use it:  In the Calm Infusion Serum, it is responsible for the serum's elegant, slip-like texture — the way it spreads and absorbs evenly without pulling or feeling thick.

What it is:  Two complementary texture agents used together in the Fresh Start Cleanser. Xanthan gum is a fermentation-derived polysaccharide; hydroxyethylcellulose is derived from plant cellulose.

What it does:  Together, they create the cleanser's gel consistency — a texture that is easy to dispense, spreads smoothly, and rinses cleanly without leaving residue. They ensure the formula doesn't feel too watery or too thick, maintaining the right sensory experience throughout the cleansing process.

Why we use it:  The texture of a cleanser significantly affects the experience of using it. These natural gelling agents give the Fresh Start Cleanser its satisfying, skin-friendly consistency.

Antioxidants protect skin from oxidative stress — the cumulative damage caused by everyday exposure to UV light, pollution, and environmental factors. It also has mild conditioning properties that contribute to soft, comfortable skin, and it helps stabilize other sensitive ingredients in the formula — including plant oils that can become rancid with exposure to air.

Why we use it:  Every Second Spring formula containing an oil phase includes tocopherol. It performs two jobs at once: protecting your skin and protecting the integrity of the formula itself.

These are the purposeful, results-oriented ingredients in our formulas — each chosen for a specific, documented benefit. We use them at meaningful concentrations, and we choose forms that are well-tolerated by reactive skin. No high-dose single actives, no skin adjustment periods required.

It contributes to a more even-looking skin tone, helps reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, and improves overall skin texture over time. It also has a gentle calming effect and is well-tolerated even by reactive and sensitive skin — something that cannot be said for many actives at comparable effectiveness.

Why we use it:  We include niacinamide in the Daily Reset Essence at a level (3%) that delivers meaningful benefit without the risk of irritation. It's one of the most straightforward and reliable choices in skincare.

What it does:  Ectoin forms a stable protective layer around skin cells and proteins, shielding them from heat, UV stress, and environmental disruption. It helps cells hold onto water more effectively, supports a healthy-feeling skin barrier, and contributes to skin that feels consistently hydrated and resilient throughout the day. It is exceptionally gentle — one of the few actives with virtually no reported irritation even in sensitive populations.

Why we use it:  For skin navigating hormonal change — which often means increased sensitivity alongside decreased resilience — ectoin offers cellular-level support without any risk of reactivity. It is one of the most sophisticated choices in the Daily Reset Essence.

It produces a gentle, low-density lather and has a very low irritation potential, making it suitable for daily use on sensitive, reactive, or hormonally changed skin.

Why we use it:  This is one of the primary cleansing agents in the Fresh Start Cleanser. Gentle cleansing is the foundation of a good skincare routine — especially for skin that is reactive to most things.

What it is:  Another plant-derived, sugar-based surfactant — made from glucose and a fatty alcohol derived from coconut or palm oil. A common companion to coco glucoside in gentle cleansing systems.

What it does:  Decyl glucoside is slightly milder than coco glucoside and helps fine-tune the cleansing system for optimal gentleness. Together the two glucosides create a balanced, skin-respectful cleansing experience that removes what needs to be removed without disrupting what should stay.

Why we use it:  The combination of two complementary glucosides gives us a cleansing system that is thorough without being aggressive — exactly right for the daily cleanser in a routine designed for reactive skin.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine

What it is:  An amphoteric surfactant derived from coconut oil. Amphoteric means it can behave as both a positive and negative charge depending on the surrounding conditions, making it exceptionally compatible with skin.

What it does:  Coco-betaine enhances the lather of the cleanser formula and, importantly, reduces the irritation potential of the other surfactants it is combined with — a phenomenon well-documented in formulation science. It also contributes conditioning properties and helps the formula feel smooth and comfortable on skin during use.

Why we use it:  Its primary role is as a mildness enhancer. It makes the whole cleanser system gentler than the individual components alone — a classic formulation principle for sensitive skin systems.

Preservatives are the ingredients that keep skincare products safe to use throughout their shelf life. Any formula containing water requires preservation — without it, bacteria and mold can grow rapidly, turning a beneficial product into a harmful one. Our preservation system uses modern, well-tolerated options chosen specifically for their compatibility with sensitive skin.

What it is:  A two-component preservation system. Phenoxyethanol is a well-established preservative used widely in clean and conventional skincare. Ethylhexylglycerin is a glycerin-derived multifunctional ingredient that enhances preservative efficacy and has skin-conditioning properties of its own.

What it does:  This combination provides broad-spectrum protection against bacteria, yeast, and mold at a low total concentration (0.9% in our formulas). Ethylhexylglycerin allows a lower level of phenoxyethanol to be used while maintaining protection — which benefits skin tolerability.

Why we use it:  This system is accepted in natural and clean beauty formulations and is among the most widely studied and well-tolerated preservation options for reactive skin. We use it at the lowest effective concentration.

Hydroxyacetophenone

What it is:  A multifunctional ingredient derived from a naturally occurring compound found in plants. It functions as both a preservation enhancer and an antioxidant within the formula.

What it does:  Hydroxyacetophenone boosts the efficacy of the primary preservation system, allowing the overall preservative concentration to remain low. It also provides antioxidant protection within the formula itself — helping prevent oxidation of oils and active ingredients over the product's shelf life. Its skin tolerability is excellent.

Why we use it:  It allows us to maintain formula integrity and safety with a lighter preservation footprint — consistent with our approach of doing more with less, using purposeful ingredients that perform multiple roles.

These ingredients perform essential background roles — stabilizing the formula, maintaining the correct pH, and chelating minerals that could otherwise degrade the formula over time. They may not headline a product, but a formula without them wouldn't work nearly as well.

What it is:  The sodium salt of gluconic acid, a compound naturally derived from glucose. It functions as a chelating agent in skincare formulations.

What it does:  Chelating agents bind to trace metal ions (such as calcium and magnesium from water) that could otherwise destabilize the formula, reduce preservative efficacy, or cause discoloration over time. By keeping these metals in check, sodium gluconate helps the formula maintain its texture, color, and preservation throughout its shelf life.

Why we use it:  A well-formulated product is a stable one. Sodium gluconate is one of the gentlest and most effective chelating agents available, and it is used across all four formulas for this reason.

What it is:  Organic acids used in small amounts to bring each formula to its target pH. Lactic acid is derived from fermentation; citric acid from citrus fruit.

What it does:  Skin has a naturally slightly acidic pH (around 4.5–5.5), sometimes called the acid mantle. Skincare formulas must be formulated within or near this range to be gentle, effective, and supportive of the skin barrier. At the trace amounts used for pH adjustment, these acids do not function as exfoliants.

Why we use it:  Correct pH is not optional — it determines whether actives work, whether preservation is effective, and whether the formula feels comfortable on skin. This is one of those invisible details that separates thoughtful formulation from careless production.
